Task Listening Activity:
Saturday Night Party
Procedure: Read the following dialogue slowly as your students look at the picture. Have them match the letters with the correct people.
Instructions to students:
Bettina, a German exchange student, doesn’t know anyone at the party. Mark knows a few of the people at the party. Listen to Bettina and Mark’s conversation and match the people in the picture with the correct names.
Dialogue:
Bettina: Which one is Elise?
Mark: She’s sitting down, and she’s talking to Joe.
Bettina: Where’s Joe?
Mark: He’s sitting next to Elise on the sofa and has his arm around her.
Bettina: When did they start dating?
Mark: Oh, since last month. Before that, Joe used to date Gail, the woman who is wearing pants and has a drink in her hand.
Bettina: Is Gail having a conversation with another woman?
Mark: No, she isn’t. Gail is standing alone. Maria, the woman who has the bow on her blouse, is talking with another woman.
Bettina: What’s the name of the woman who is turned away from us and is speaking with Maria?
Mark: That’s Kim. She’s very beautiful, though you can’t tell because her face is hidden. Kim’s boyfriend, Tom, is here, too. He’s sitting down.
Bettina: Is Tom sitting next to Joe on the couch?
Mark: No, Tom is the one sitting on the dark chair, playing the guitar.
Bettina: Who is the man opening the can of beer?
Mark: That’s not a can of beer. Jim only drinks brown tea.
Bettina: Which woman is speaking to Jim?
Mark: I’ve only seen her once before. I think her name is Christy… no, I’m sorry, her name is Heather.
Choose the right letter for each person.
