Speech-Related Activity 1: Talking on the Phone

Aims: To get students to talk LOUDLY and CLEARLY.

Procedure:

1. Using toy plastic phones, the JTE and the AET (or a student) conduct a conversation from different sides of the classroom.

2. Repeat

3. Pass one phone up and down the rows.  When the phone “rings” the student holding it must conduct a short conversation using the same pattern.

4. Use as many unusual and strange sound effects as possible.  Make ringing sounds, busy signals, the tones from push button-phones, etc.

5. Absolutely DO NOT move closer to hear a student.  Insist the student talk as if he or she were on a real phone.

6. As the game progresses, make each new student add at least one new detail or pattern from the previous conversation.
